Grimsby Town 2-0 Swindon Town

Grimsby secured League Two survival with victory over Swindon at Blundell Park.

Cheltenham loanee Liam Smith and forward Donovan Wilson scored the goals in the final quarter of the game to clinch the win for David Artell's side.

There was not much in the way of goalmouth action in the first half, with the best chance for the visitors coming inside the opening six minutes as Charlie Austin headed just wide from 10 yards.

Kieran Green had a close-range effort stopped by Swindon goalkeeper Jack Bycroft in the second minute of added time for the first period.

The second half followed similarly to the first but the home side did manage to get ahead in the 75th minute through Smith, who finished off a quick counter from the Mariners.

Wilson's strike came in the 85th minute to make it a more comfortable finish to the game for Grimsby - smashing in off a post from the edge of the box.

    As has been said, GTFC have some decent players but no one get get a consistent song from the team. It has been a dour struggle to avoid the drop. We have seen OK performances in some games, only to be followed by absolute dross in the next game. There is a lot of hard work to do in the summer and the recruitment needs to be a lot better than last year. UTM

    Luckily there's 3 worse teams than Grimsby. Not good.......need a clearout from top to bottom. They are currently a league team (on the fringe of being non league). Shame.

      David Moyes might be available at end of the season, be someone different to blame and heckle. As for Clem perhaps he ought to hand over to a fans consortium. At least they might have some idea about the club and how it should be run?

    When ‘managers’ like Gunning make comments like ‘the players lack heart’ does he not realise that is down to him! He and Morfuni have no ambition or the common sense to see what is needed. Hope they are both gone soon. I have supported STFC since 1962 and have never seen so many matches where we fail to get a shot on target, let alone score.

    Perfect fixture for Grimsby in their position. A guaranteed home win. Swindon as good as non league, a disgrace to the clubs name

      You are getting ahead of yourself philer old chap, non league is the mission statement for next season and whoever manages Town. Regrettably we have had a few hiccups and won matches by mistake to make us safe this season. If we can lose our best players and appoint a real duffer I feel inverse promotion next season is a distinct possibility!
